The Canyon Police Department Law Enforcement Student Academy is designed for students who are enrolled or will be enrolled at Canyon Junior High or Canyon High School. The students will gain first-hand experience in the field of law enforcement. The goal of the Academy is to create responsible, well-informed students who have an interest in this career. Canyon Police Department also seeks to enhance, through education, the positive relationship with the community it serves.
This academy will be held June 17th to June 20th from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Many topics will be covered to include how a student can prepare him/herself for a career in law enforcement. The students will learn the basic functions of a police department along with some specialized training in topics such as crime scene investigation, defensive tactics, and firearms training/safety. Students will be given an opportunity to practice what they are learned in the classroom with some hands-on practical exercises.
Applications will be accepted from students who will be entering the 8th – 12th grades at Canyon Junior High or Canyon High School. Students will be expected to follow the behavior guidelines attached to this application packet. Because of the seriousness of the content in the camp, these guidelines will be strictly enforced.
Applicants will be required to interview with a Police Officer and discuss why they would like to participate in the Academy.
The law enforcement Academy will be limited in size. Be sure to get your application in quickly. The Academy will be located at the Cole Community Center/Canyon Police Department located at 301 16th Street, Canyon TX 79015. There will be no cost for the Academy.
