Citizen Police Academy


The Canyon Police Department Citizen Police Academy is a block of instruction designed to give the public a working knowledge of the Canyon Police Department’s operating procedures.

It consists of a series of classes held once a week for three hours. Class is usually held on Tuesday nights from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The academy is usually held once a year.

Each week a different area of the criminal justice system is covered. Instructors represent a cross section of the department and other law enforcement professionals each of who are well qualified in their field.

If you are a Canyon resident or business owner, at least 18 years of age, and are interested in applying for admission to the Canyon Police Department Citizen Police Academy, please fill out an application and fax it to (806) 655-5007 or mail it to:

Applicants are subject to a background check. Those selected for the next academy will be contacted by phone and in writing. Prospective students must commit to and attend a majority of the classes.

The Canyon Citizens Police Academy covers such diverse topics as:

Emphasis is placed on the Patrol Division which is the most visible component of the police department.

Instruction in these and other topics will consist of lectures, demonstrations, tours and hands-on experiences.
